What it is
The Public Health Agency of Sweden (Folkhälsomyndigheten) is a national government agency tasked with promoting public health, preventing diseases, and monitoring communicable health threats. Established in January 2014, it was created through the merger of the Swedish National Institute of Public Health and the Swedish Institute for Communicable Disease Control. The agency drew global attention during the COVID-19 pandemic for its distinctive, largely advisory and non-coercive management strategy led by State Epidemiologist Anders Tegnell.
