What it is

Historic Royal Palaces is an independent charity contracted by the UK government to conserve and manage six unoccupied royal palaces, including the Tower of London, Hampton Court Palace, and Kensington Palace. Its mandate is to preserve these historic buildings and their collections while opening them to the public for education and engagement without receiving regular state or Crown subsidies. Established in 1989 as an executive agency within the Department of the Environment, it transitioned into an independent royal charter body with charitable status in 1998.
