What it is
The Home Office is a ministerial department of the United Kingdom Government responsible for national security, policing in England and Wales, public safety, and immigration control. Established in March 1782 by reorganizing the responsibilities of the Southern Department, it is one of the oldest Great Offices of State. Over its history, the department originally oversaw domestic affairs and colonies before being repeatedly reorganized to focus primarily on internal security and law enforcement.
