What it is
The Social Mobility Commission is an independent advisory non-departmental public body sponsored by the UK Cabinet Office. Its role is to assess and report on national progress in improving social mobility across the UK—most notably through its annual 'State of the Nation' report—and advocate for systemic change across England's education and employment sectors. Originally established under the Child Poverty Act 2010 as the Child Poverty Commission, it was renamed and given its current focused statutory remit under the Welfare Reform and Work Act 2016.
