What it is

The Senate of Canada is the upper house of the Parliament of Canada, composed of 105 senators appointed by the Governor General on the advice of the Prime Minister. Its primary mandate is to provide 'sober second thought' by scrutinizing, amending, or rejecting legislation passed by the House of Commons, while also championing regional, minority, and sectoral interests. Established in 1867 under the British North America Act (now the Constitution Act, 1867), the institution reached a historic milestone in 1930 when Cairine Wilson was appointed as its first female senator following the landmark Persons Case.
