What it is
The Alabama Department of Finance is the primary state executive agency responsible for managing the fiscal affairs and central operations of the State of Alabama. Its mandate includes overseeing state budgeting, accounting, procurement, debt management, and financial reporting across state government entities. Established in 1939 under Act No. 112 of the Alabama Legislature, the agency was created to consolidate scattered administrative duties and centralize financial control under a single director. Over the years, several of its specialized units expanded to form independent agencies, such as the Alabama Office of Information Technology.
