What it is
The Alaska Department of Health (DOH) is a cabinet-level executive department of the State of Alaska responsible for promoting, protecting, and managing the public health and health insurance systems of the state's residents. Its mandate includes administering Alaska Medicaid, disease control and epidemiology, substance misuse prevention, public assistance programs, and senior and disability support services. While state health administration originally began upon Alaska's statehood in 1959 under the historic Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS), the modern Department of Health was formally created on July 1, 2022, when Governor Mike Dunleavy's Executive Order 121 divided the legacy agency to streamline health financing and policy separate from community-based direct care facilities.
