What it is
The Alaska Division of Elections is the state election management agency operating within the Office of the Lieutenant Governor of Alaska. Its constitutional and statutory mandate is to administer impartial, secure, and accessible federal, state, and regional elections across Alaska, maintain the statewide voter registration database, verify initiative petitions, and certify official vote tallies. Established in 1959 upon Alaska's admission as the 49th U.S. state, the division gained national prominence in 2020 and 2022 when it successfully implemented Alaska Ballot Measure 2, establishing the nation's first combination of a nonpartisan top-four primary with ranked-choice general voting.
