What it is
The California Water Commission is a state regulatory and advisory body within the California Department of Water Resources, consisting of nine members appointed by the Governor. Its mandate is to conduct public hearings and advise the Department of Water Resources, oversee eminent domain proceedings for State Water Project facilities, and administer public funding for water storage projects under Proposition 1 (the Water Storage Investment Program). While the statutory foundation for statewide water administration dates back to the Water Commission Act of 1913, the modern California Water Commission was formally established in 1956 during the comprehensive legislative reorganization that created the California Department of Water Resources.
