What it is
The City of Palm Springs is a charter city and municipal local government authority located in the Coachella Valley within Riverside County, California. Governed by a directly elected mayor and city council operating under a council-manager system, its mandate is to provide public safety, local infrastructure maintenance, zoning, municipal utilities, and economic and tourism promotion for residents and visitors. Formally incorporated on April 20, 1938, the desert oasis developed on the ancestral lands of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians and historically grew into an internationally famous playground for Hollywood celebrities, celebrated for its mid-century modern architecture and early municipal civil rights leadership.
