What it is
The Commonwealth of Massachusetts is a constituent federated state of the United States of America, exercising sovereign constitutional government in the New England region. Its government is structured into executive, legislative (the Massachusetts General Court), and judicial branches, with a constitutional mandate to enact laws, manage public education and infrastructure, provide healthcare and social services, and safeguard civil liberties. Tracing its colonial origins to the founding of the Plymouth Colony in 1620 and the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1630, it was one of the original Thirteen Colonies that led the American Revolution, ratifying its foundational state constitution—authored primarily by John Adams—in 1780 before formally ratifying the United States Constitution as the sixth state on February 6, 1788.
