What it is
The Delaware Department of Justice is the principal legal and law enforcement agency of the State of Delaware, led by the elected Delaware Attorney General. Its mandate is to prosecute all criminal offenses statewide, represent state agencies and officials in legal proceedings, protect consumers and civil rights, and provide legal counsel to the Governor and Legislature. Uniquely structured as a unified statewide prosecutorial agency with no independent county district attorneys, the office was constitutionally established in 1776 during the American Revolution and later transitioned from a gubernatorial appointment to a popularly elected executive office under the Delaware Constitution of 1897.
