What it is
The Denver District Court is the state trial court of general jurisdiction serving the City and County of Denver, operating as Colorado's Second Judicial District. Its judicial mandate is to preside over felony criminal trials, general and high-value civil lawsuits, probate and mental health proceedings, and domestic relations cases. While judicial district frameworks were originally established under the 1876 Colorado Constitution upon statehood, the court assumed its distinct consolidated municipal-county judicial boundaries in 1902 when Colorado voters adopted Article XX (the Home Rule Amendment) creating the combined City and County of Denver.
