What it is
The United States Department of Education is a cabinet-level executive department of the U.S. federal government. Its mandate is to establish federal education policy, administer financial aid programs, collect national educational data, and enforce federal civil rights laws in education. Although an earlier non-cabinet agency existed as far back as 1867, the modern department was officially created by splitting the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare under the Department of Education Organization Act of 1979.
