What it is
The Department of Emergency and Customer Communications (DECC) is the municipal public safety communications agency of the City of Alexandria, Virginia. Its mandate is to answer all 911 emergency and non-emergency calls, dispatch police, fire, and emergency medical services (EMS), manage citywide emergency alerting systems, and operate the Alex311 citizen customer service center. Established in 2011 to consolidate emergency dispatch functions previously operated separately by the Alexandria Police and Fire Departments, the agency relocated into the city's state-of-the-art Public Safety Center and became one of the first standalone emergency communications centers in Virginia to earn international CALEA accreditation in 2018.
