United States · founded 2002

What it is

The Florida Commission for Independent Education (CIE) is a regulatory agency operating within the Florida Department of Education. It is mandated to oversee, license, and establish educational standards for independent postsecondary degree-granting colleges, universities, and career schools in Florida, while also protecting consumers and maintaining closed-school student records. It was created in 2002 by the Florida Legislature through Chapter 2002-387, which restructured state education governance and consolidated the responsibilities of earlier bodies including the State Board of Independent Colleges and Universities and the State Board of Nonpublic Career Education.
