What it is
The Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDEcD) is the principal agency responsible for planning, managing, and promoting economic growth and community development in the U.S. state of Georgia. Operating under the Office of the Governor, its mandate includes attracting new business investment, encouraging the expansion of existing industry and small businesses, fostering international trade, and promoting tourism as well as film and arts. The agency was originally established in 1949 as the Georgia Department of Commerce under Governor Herman Talmadge. Over the decades, it underwent several reorganizations to reflect the state's transition from an agricultural economy into a major global hub for logistics, manufacturing, and entertainment.
