What it is
The Governor's Office of Montana is the supreme executive administrative body of the State of Montana, supporting the Governor as the head of the state government and commander-in-chief of the Montana National Guard. Operating out of the Montana State Capitol in Helena, its constitutional mandate is to faithfully execute state laws, submit biennial executive budgets, approve or veto acts passed by the Montana Legislature, and appoint state department directors and judicial vacancies subject to Senate confirmation. Established on November 8, 1889, under the inaugural Montana Constitution when Montana was admitted to the Union as the 41st U.S. state, Joseph Toole was elected to serve as the state's first governor.
