What it is
The Hancock City Council is the legislative and governing body for the City of Hancock, located in Houghton County on Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Composed of seven council members elected by the community operating under a council-manager form of government, its mandate is to enact local ordinances, approve the municipal budget, determine property tax rates, and appoint the city manager to oversee daily municipal operations. While first platted in 1859 during the Copper Country mining boom and organized as a village in 1863, the modern City Council was formally established when Hancock officially incorporated as a city in 1903, becoming known as the northernmost city in Michigan and a historic hub of Finnish-American culture.
