What it is

The Hancock Planning Commission is a statutory local advisory and administrative board serving the City of Hancock in Houghton County, Michigan. Composed of citizens appointed by the City Council, its mandate is to prepare, adopt, and periodically update the city's Master Plan, administer the local zoning ordinance, review site plans and special land-use permits, and advise the City Council on capital improvements and sustainable urban development. Operating under the framework established by the Michigan Planning Enabling Act (Public Act 33 of 2008), the commission guides the physical and economic growth of Michigan's northernmost city, preserving its unique copper-mining heritage and waterfront along the Keweenaw Waterway.
