What it is
The Iowa General Assembly is the bicameral state legislature of the U.S. state of Iowa, composed of the Senate and the House of Representatives. It holds the constitutional mandate to enact state laws, establish the state budget, and oversee public policy for Iowa. Tracing its roots to the Iowa territorial legislature established in 1838, the state assembly first convened in 1846 following Iowa's admission to the Union. In 1857, the legislature relocated from Iowa City to the new state capital of Des Moines.
