What it is
The Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) is the primary municipal law enforcement agency serving the City of Long Beach, California, and stands as the second-largest municipal police department in Los Angeles County. Its mandate is to preserve public peace, enforce local, state, and federal laws, investigate criminal offenses, and provide specialized community policing, maritime port security, and traffic safety services across the city. The department was founded on January 30, 1888, when Horatio Davies was elected as the municipality's first city marshal, before formally transitioning from an elected marshal system to an appointed Chief of Police administration in 1908.
