United States · founded 1812

What it is

The Louisiana Department of State is an executive branch government agency headed by the elected Louisiana Secretary of State. It is responsible for administering statewide elections, maintaining official government records and commercial registries, and preserving state history through the Louisiana State Archives and state museums. Established upon Louisiana's admission to statehood in 1812, the department originally served as the keeper of the state seal and public acts before expanding in the 20th century to oversee modern election administration and corporate filings.
