What it is
The Louisiana House of Representatives is the lower chamber of the Louisiana State Legislature, the state's bicameral legislative body. Composed of 105 representatives serving four-year terms, it is responsible for drafting, debating, and enacting state laws, as well as initiating all revenue-raising bills. Established in 1812 under Louisiana's first state constitution upon its admission to the Union, the chamber operated under a civil law tradition unique among U.S. states. During the Reconstruction era, it notably became one of the first southern legislative chambers to seat African American lawmakers.
