What it is

The Missouri Division of Alcohol and Tobacco Control (ATC) is a specialized regulatory and law enforcement agency within the Missouri Department of Public Safety. Its statutory mandate is to regulate the manufacture, distribution, sale, and labeling of alcoholic beverages and tobacco products across Missouri, license commercial operators, collect alcohol excise taxes, and enforce age compliance laws against youth access. Established on January 15, 1934, as the Department of Liquor Control immediately following the repeal of national Prohibition, the agency was integrated into the Department of Public Safety during the 1974 state government reorganization and renamed in 2001 to reflect its expanded oversight of youth tobacco access.
