What it is

The Montana Board of Housing (MBOH) is a quasi-governmental state public agency administratively attached to the Montana Department of Commerce. Governed by seven citizen members appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the Montana Senate, its statutory mandate is to increase affordable housing options for low- and moderate-income Montanans by issuing tax-exempt housing revenue bonds, allocating federal Low-Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC), and managing first-time homebuyer mortgage programs. Created by the Montana Legislature under the Housing Act of 1975, the board functions as a self-sustaining entity that does not rely on state general fund tax revenues, financing thousands of affordable single-family and multifamily housing units across the state.
