What it is
The New York City Civilian Complaint Review Board (CCRB) is an independent municipal oversight agency in the United States tasked with investigating, mediating, and prosecuting civilian complaints of misconduct against New York City police officers. Its mandate covers allegations involving excessive force, abuse of authority, discourtesy, and offensive language. Although an internal police board by the same name was first created in 1953, decades of public debate and a defeated civilian board referendum in 1966 culminated in City Charter amendments that established the current, fully civilian-run independent agency in 1993.
