What it is
The North Dakota Department of Commerce is a cabinet-level executive agency of the State of North Dakota responsible for leading the state's economic growth and diversification. Its mandate is to attract and retain businesses, support workforce development, promote state tourism, finance community development and affordable housing initiatives, and foster technological innovation in energy and agriculture. Created during the 2001 legislative session through Senate Bill 2032 under Governor John Hoeven, the department consolidated four previously disparate state entities—the Department of Economic Development and Finance, Division of Community Services, Tourism Department, and Workforce Development Council—into a unified economic engine.
