United States

What it is

The Office of the Attorney General for the District of Columbia (OAG) is the chief legal agency representing the municipal government and the public interest of Washington, D.C. Its mandate includes conducting all civil litigation for the District, enforcing consumer protection, antitrust, and civil rights laws, handling juvenile justice cases, and advising city agencies. Historically appointed by the mayor, the office was made an independent constitutional role following a 2010 charter amendment referendum approved by voters, leading to the District's first direct election for attorney general in 2014.
