What it is
The Office of the Governor of Colorado is the head of the executive branch of the Colorado state government. The governor is mandated to enforce state laws, oversee executive departments, approve or veto legislative bills, and serve as commander-in-chief of the state's military forces. Established upon Colorado's admission to the Union in 1876, the office evolved from a territorial governorship created in 1861, with John Long Routt serving as both the final territorial governor and the first elected state governor.
