What it is
The Office of the Governor of Kentucky is the chief executive authority of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Charged with enforcing state laws, heading the executive branch, and serving as commander-in-chief of the state's military forces, the governor oversees state administration and possesses veto power over legislative acts. Established in 1792 with the adoption of Kentucky's first constitution, Isaac Shelby was inaugurated as the inaugural governor, and the institution remains the only U.S. governorship to have experienced the assassination of an incumbent while in office, William Goebel, in 1900.
