Office of the Governor of OhioGovernment

United States · founded 1803

What it is

The Office of the Governor of Ohio is the supreme executive authority of the State of Ohio, supporting the Governor as the head of state government and commander-in-chief of the Ohio National Guard. Operating from the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus, its constitutional mandate is to ensure the faithful execution of state laws, submit the biennial executive state budget, sign or veto legislation enacted by the Ohio General Assembly, and appoint directors of executive departments and administrative boards. Established under Ohio's inaugural constitution in 1803 upon admission to the Union as the 17th U.S. state, Edward Tiffin was elected as the state's first governor, presiding over an office that originally possessed very weak executive powers and no legislative veto until a constitutional amendment granted gubernatorial veto authority in 1903.
