What it is
The Office of the Governor of Virginia is the supreme executive authority of the Commonwealth of Virginia, supporting the Governor as head of the state government and commander-in-chief of the Virginia National Guard. Operating from the historic Virginia Executive Mansion and State Capitol in Richmond, its constitutional mandate is to execute state laws, submit the biennial executive state budget, recommend and sign or veto legislation passed by the General Assembly, and exercise powers of executive clemency. Established in 1776 under Virginia's first state constitution during the American Revolution, with Patrick Henry chosen as the commonwealth's inaugural governor, the office is historically unique as the only state governorship in the United States that constitutionally prohibits the incumbent from serving consecutive terms.
