Office of the Legislative Inspector GeneralParliament
United States · founded 2003
What it is
The Office of the Legislative Inspector General is an ethics oversight and investigative body serving state legislative branches in the United States, most prominently established in Illinois to examine allegations of misconduct, fraud, and ethics violations among lawmakers and legislative staff. Created by the Illinois General Assembly under the State Officials and Employees Ethics Act of 2003, the office operates in conjunction with a bipartisan ethics commission. Historically, the agency has been the subject of ongoing reform debates due to statutory restrictions that initially required legislative approval to initiate investigations or publicly release founded reports.
