What it is
The Ohkay Owingeh Tribal Council is the governing authority of Ohkay Owingeh (formerly San Juan Pueblo), a federally recognized sovereign Native American nation in north-central New Mexico. Operating under a traditional form of governance guided by a Governor and council elders rather than an IRA constitution, its mandate is to manage tribal land and water rights, oversee local infrastructure and housing, provide healthcare and social services, and preserve the Tewa language and cultural heritage. The pueblo has been continuously inhabited since circa 1200 CE and holds a celebrated place in indigenous history as the home of Popé, the visionary spiritual leader who organized the historic Pueblo Revolt of 1680 that successfully repelled Spanish colonial rule for over a decade.
