What it is
PBS Wisconsin and Wisconsin Public Radio (operating together under the division Wisconsin Public Media) form the public broadcasting network of Wisconsin, co-licensed to the University of Wisconsin–Madison and the state Educational Communications Board (ECB). Its mandate is to educate, inform, and entertain communities across the state by delivering noncommercial educational television, radio programming, local news, and civic coverage grounded in the "Wisconsin Idea." The network's lineage began in 1917 with experimental station 9XM (now WHA) at UW–Madison, which pioneered early wireless voice transmissions and became one of the oldest and most influential continuous public broadcasting roots in American history.
