What it is

The Risk Management Board (RMB) is a formal governance body established across U.S. federal and defense acquisition programs to oversee program-level risks, issues, and opportunities. Chaired by program leadership, it is mandated to evaluate risk analyses, approve mitigation strategies, and allocate resources to ensure mission, cost, and schedule baselines are met. Formalized in federal acquisition frameworks during the Department of Defense's acquisition reforms of the late 1990s, RMBs became standardized via the Defense Acquisition University and DoD Risk Management guidelines.
