What it is
The St. Lucie County Fire District is an independent special taxing district providing fire prevention, fire suppression, rescue, and emergency medical services (EMS) across St. Lucie County, Florida, including the municipalities of Fort Pierce and Port St. Lucie. Governed by a dedicated Board of Commissioners representing county and city appointees alongside a gubernatorial appointee, its mandate is to safeguard lives and property through emergency response, hazardous materials mitigation, and public safety education. The modern district was officially established in 1959 by special act of the Florida Legislature (Chapter 59-1806) as the St. Lucie County/Fort Pierce Fire District, evolving from earlier local volunteer brigades into one of the largest consolidated independent fire-rescue districts on Florida's Treasure Coast.
