What it is
The State of Colorado is a constituent federated state of the United States of America, exercising sovereign governmental authority under the Colorado Constitution within its geographic borders. Its republican form of government is divided into executive, legislative (the Colorado General Assembly), and judicial branches, with a constitutional mandate to enact state laws, provide public education and infrastructure, administer law enforcement and healthcare, and protect civil liberties. Admitted to the Union by proclamation of President Ulysses S. Grant on August 1, 1876, precisely twenty-eight days after the United States celebrated the centennial of the Declaration of Independence, it earned the enduring official moniker "The Centennial State."
