What it is
The Texas Education Agency is the state government agency responsible for overseeing public primary and secondary education in Texas. Led by the Commissioner of Education, its mandate includes administering state and federal education funding, monitoring academic performance and curriculum standards, and accrediting school districts. It was established in 1949 following the passage of the landmark Gilmer-Aikin Laws, which comprehensively restructured the state's public education system.
