What it is
The Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas (UG) is a consolidated city-county local government entity in northeastern Kansas. Led by an elected Mayor/CEO and a Board of Commissioners operating under a commission-manager administrative framework, its mandate is to provide unified municipal and county public services, including law enforcement, public health, road infrastructure, zoning, and municipal utilities across the jurisdiction. Established on October 1, 1997, after voters approved a landmark consolidation charter in an April 1997 referendum to eliminate overlapping bureaucracies and reduce property taxes, it became one of the relatively few consolidated city-county governments in the United States and the first in Kansas.
