What it is
The United States Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York (EDNY) is the federal prosecutorial agency representing the United States Department of Justice across Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and Long Island. Its statutory mandate is to investigate and prosecute federal criminal offenses—ranging from international terrorism and financial fraud to public corruption and transnational narcotics trafficking—and litigate civil actions involving the federal government. Established by Congress on February 25, 1865, when the Eastern District was separated from the Southern District of New York, the office has prosecuted some of the nation's most consequential criminal trials, including landmark cases against the Five Families of La Cosa Nostra and cartel leader Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán.
