What it is
The United States District Court for the District of Utah is an Article III federal trial court with statewide jurisdiction over the State of Utah, headquartered at the Orrin G. Hatch United States Courthouse in Salt Lake City. Its judicial mandate is to hear civil lawsuits involving federal questions or diversity of citizenship, adjudicate federal criminal prosecutions, and handle bankruptcy proceedings arising anywhere in the state. Established by Congress on January 4, 1896, under the Utah Enabling Act when Utah was admitted to the Union as the 45th state, President Grover Cleveland appointed John A. Marshall as the court's first federal district judge.
