What it is
The Utah Third District Court is the state trial court of general jurisdiction serving Salt Lake, Summit, and Tooele counties within the Utah State Courts system. Operating with courthouses in Salt Lake City, West Jordan, Silver Summit, and Tooele, its mandate is to preside over felony criminal trials, large-scale civil litigation, domestic relations and divorce proceedings, and probate matters. Formally established under Article VIII, Section 16 of the original Utah State Constitution when Utah was admitted to the Union in 1896, the Third District has historically handled the state's largest judicial caseload and high-profile statewide constitutional challenges centered in the capital city.
