What it is
The Vermont State Board of Education is a governor-appointed policy and regulatory body responsible for guiding statewide public educational standards across Vermont. Its mandate includes establishing rules and curriculum frameworks for pre-kindergarten through grade 12 public and independent schools, approving educator licensing standards, overseeing school district boundaries and supervisory union mergers under legislation such as Act 46, and ensuring equitable educational opportunities for all students. First created by the Vermont General Assembly in 1856 to oversee common schools and select textbooks, the board was permanently reconstituted into its modern administrative governance structure in 1915, working in partnership with the Vermont Agency of Education.
