What it is
The Virginia Board of Historic Resources is a governor-appointed policy board within the executive branch of the Commonwealth of Virginia, working in partnership with the Virginia Department of Historic Resources (DHR). Its statutory mandate is to designate landmarks for inclusion on the Virginia Landmarks Register, approve nominations to the National Register of Historic Places, authorize official state historical highway markers, and hold historic preservation easements on behalf of the Commonwealth. Originally created by the General Assembly in 1966 as the Virginia Historic Landmarks Commission, the body was restructured and established in its modern form as the Board of Historic Resources in 1989 when DHR was elevated to a standalone cabinet-level department.
