What it is
The West Virginia Board of Education (WVBE) is the constitutional governing authority responsible for the general supervision of public elementary and secondary education across the State of West Virginia. Composed of nine voting members appointed by the Governor with state Senate confirmation, its mandate is to establish academic content standards, promulgate educational rules and policies, oversee the state system of public schools, and appoint the State Superintendent of Schools. Originally created as a statutory board in 1908 by the West Virginia Legislature, the board was elevated to an independent constitutional entity in 1958 through a voter-approved amendment to Article XII, Section 2 of the West Virginia Constitution, vesting it with sovereign authority over the state's free school system.
