What it is
The Ministry of Finance (Ministério das Finanças) is the central government department responsible for formulating and executing Portugal's budgetary, taxation, and public financial policies. It manages the national budget, oversees public debt and taxation, and coordinates economic strategy within the European Union framework. Tracing its administrative lineage to medieval treasury comptrollerships, the modern ministerial body was formally established in 1788 by Queen Mary I as the Secretariat of State for Treasury Affairs before receiving its current name in 1910.
