The Ministry of Internal Administration is the Portuguese government department responsible for public security, civil protection, and electoral administration. It oversees key national law enforcement agencies, including the Public Security Police and the National Republican Guard, as well as emergency management and road safety. Originally established in 1736 by King John V as the Secretariat of State for the Interior Affairs of the Kingdom, it is Portugal's oldest continuously operating ministry. It was restructured and adopted its current designation in 1974 following the Carnation Revolution.
