What it is

The Portuguese Armed Forces (Forças Armadas) is the national military of Portugal, comprising the Navy, the Army, and the Air Force. Operating under the authority of the Ministry of National Defence with the President of the Republic as Commander-in-Chief, its mandate is the defense of Portugal's sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the maintenance of international peace and security. Dating back to the foundation of the Kingdom of Portugal in the 12th century, the military played a defining role in modern history by leading the 1974 Carnation Revolution, which peacefully toppled the Estado Novo regime and restored democracy.
